Is Your Cat Overweight?

It is not always easy to tell if a cat is overweight or not. For example my own cat does appear enormous compared to some other slimmer cats. However, and this is a fact I have had confirmed by the vet, my cat is just about the correct weight for his breed. Cats come in all shapes and sizes, there are large and small and there is no ideal weight for all breeds. Long haired breeds with their large fluffy coats can appear much larger that they actually are.
As a cat owner it is important to keep a close eye on your pet's weight and this is especially true if yours is a house cat who does not get out very much and gets little exercise..Just like humans, as they age cats become less active and begin to show a tendency to put on weight. Once they reach the age of 10 or thereabouts a cats metabolism will begin to slow down and the weight can start to pile on.
A vet will tell you that a cat should be considered obese if they weigh more than 20% above the recommended body weight for their breed. It is also worth noting that mixed breeds are far more likely to put on extra weight as they gets older than a pure breeds. Also if your pet has been neutered or spayed they will again be inclined to add on the extra pounds.
There are numerous health problems associated with an animal being over weight, The extra strain placed on the heart and joints can eventually lead serious health problems. Today there are a growing range of specialist foods designed for the Adult and older cats. These provide an adequate diet with all the essential minerals, vitamins and nutrients that an older animal needs without the extra calories.
If weight is not always an accurate guide how can you tell whether your cat is actually carrying extra weight? The first sign will possibly be that your cat develops an under slung belly. In the worst cases the stomach may almost drag along the floor. If you feel the underbelly you should be able to detect the layers of fat under the skin. Being seriously overweight can cause a whole raft of medical problems for your cat. If you are concerned it is a good idea to consult your vet as he or she will be able to advise you on a suitable diet for your cat.
